Cafe Society
Sat, 22 May 2004: Took the kid down to Happy Hollow in San Jose last saturday. I hadn't been there in 30 years. It was such a blast!

We got there when it opened (10 A.M.), and I took the kid straight to Danny the Dragon. He loved it, but the big attraction was The Maze, which is just, well, a maze. You just go in and pretend to be lost, or play tag, or pretend to be an archaeologist, whatever floats your boat.

Name that grass, part 2
Sat, 22 May 2004: Peter Veillieux of East Bay Wilds and landscape architect Paul Furman (www.edgehill.net) inform me that last week's mysterious annual grass was the dreaded foxtail brome (Bromus diandrus), so I ripped it all out.

Today, I'm going to mulch like crazy because the yard is starting to look all parched and weedy. This dry, windy Spring has not been kind to the plants, especially the annuals. I might even have to invest in a garden gnome or two to camouflage some of the really blighted areas.

Name that Grass
Sun, 09 May 2004: I've decided to post some pictures of a mysterious feathery grass that appeared in the front yard this Spring and draped itself elegantly over the monkeyflowers, like a cloud of maribou descending on a host of merry chorines.

I must admit I'm becoming quite attached to it.

Remember Mom
Sat, 08 May 2004: My mom's birthday is right before Mother's Day, so we were down in Houston a couple of weeks ago to see her.

The one thing I wanted to do was go downtown and see the new train that people keep plowing their cars into.

Godzilla goes to Preschool
Sat, 03 Apr 2004: My nephew started preschool this week and came back with all kinds of crazy ideas.

He grabbed a back issue of Cat Fancy out of the magazine rack and decided to have story time with the cat.
