Wed, 25 Oct 2006: Years ago, Tony and I went to the Ponderosa Ranch, which is not really a ranch. It's the set where they made "Bonanza" back in the '60s.

It's over on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. Or was. I heard it got bulldozed and turned into condos or a golf community or something.

Birthday blowout!
Wed, 18 Oct 2006: I've never understood the concept of "California Cuisine." I mean, what exactly is that?

I grew up in California. In fact, I'm about a sixth-generation San Franciscan, and I cannot remember anyone in my family ever serving anything even remotely resembling this stuff you see on the Food Network with the swirly sauce and the flatbread and the fluffy greens and all that.
