On A Mission
Wed, 01 Jun 2005: I've been reading The Octopus, by Frank Norris. He wrote it around 1900. It's a novel based on the Southern Pacific's rapacious profiteering at the expense of the farmers of California.

It's based on fact, but fairly loosely. Most of the action takes place in Tulare County, which is maybe 150 miles southeast of where I live here, but as I'm reading the book, I'm thinking "Boy, this fictional mission in the book sure does sound a lot like Mission San Juan Bautista. It has a big dramatic view of the valley below, just like San Juan Bautista. It has a walled garden just like San Juan Bautista. It's in the middle of nowhere just like San Juan Bautista."

Memorial Day
Mon, 30 May 2005: I promised Tony and Jeff if they got up early enough on Sunday, I'd take them down to San Juan Bautista for the day to see the Mission and all that historical stuff.

Amazingly, they did get up early, so down to San Juan Bautista we went. It's about 94 miles from here.

Mon, 23 May 2005: I haven't had real good luck with submitting my work to Webzines. In fact, until this morning, my rejection rate was holding at a solid 100 percent.

Well, Chicago-based THISisGRAND wrecked that perfect record this morning with their weblication of my colorful anecdote from my long career as a Howard El commuter.
