Halloween is really big holiday for me & Tony because we met just about a week and a half before Halloween, so Halloween just brings back a lot of happy memories for us.
Also, we're both pretty frugal. I mean, we enjoy being frugal. It's kind of a hobby of ours.
And every Halloween, we argue about what's the cheapest candy to give out. I always tell Tony that you get the most bang for your buck with that Brach's candy you buy at the supermarket by the pound. I always get the fruit chews myself.
Tony always says you're better off looking for sales on the Fun Size candy bars.
Well, I decided to settle the controversy once and for all. I sent the kurttrue.com research team out into the field to find the cheapest candy bars, which turned out to be a bag of 14 Three Musketeers at the Long's Drugs for $2.69.
Then I counted out my two-and-a-half pounds of Brach's fruit chews, one by one. (There was one of 'em in there some kid had taken a bite out of and put back in the bin, but I figure that's statistically insignificant.)
OK, so I calculate that my Brach's fruit chews come to 13.9 cents per-fruit-chew, whereas the Three Musketeers bars come in at 19.2 cents per chocolate-encrusted nougat wad.
So I figure I win, right?
Well, no. Tony tells me the Safeway down the street marked the Snickers and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to $1.88 a bag!
That's a total per-treat cost of 13.4 cents!
Wait 'til next year!
